History of offset printing

Offset printing was introduced for the first time in 1798 when one of the Munich residents known as Alois Senefelder began using stones for reproducing pictures which used to be far better than all the other techniques of printing which were available then. Alios made use of stones which used to be sketched with a product which was greasy, that were rubbed with fountain solution. The very first offset printing took a while as well as some effort for producing the desired results.

Senefelder’s printing technique was discovered accidently. While polishing the stone slab, a relative of Senefelder asked him to write the bill for some worker. He did not have anything to write it on and thus he wrote it on a stone. Then he also thought of using acid on the stone. After sometime, the unwritten sections on the stone started being eaten away leaving only the written part elevated.

When the professional printers did began using offset printing processes

The process of offset printing became popular amongst the professional printers only after an engineer from France introduced steam lithography printing press. This offset printing machine came to USA in 1868. The lithographic stones used to transfer the images to the cylinder which used to be covered with blankets. Then the picture was transferred on the paper through the blanket.

Why did offset printing become popular?

Throughout its history, offset printing, started becoming popular. This was mainly because artwork used to be reproduced with effective results at low cost. Earlier, lithography printing used to develop the artwork which could be easily copied by simply making some effort.
